The Lost Boys | Investigations

Billy and Tommy hit up the public library to learn something about the weird symbol they say in the magic 8-ball. They need to work on their teamwork a bit.

Why should William Kaplan get what he wants when he can make a total fool of himself instead? )

Later, they are rebuffed by a local fortuneteller, but slip away with something potentially useful, anyway.

Did anyone else go and see it? I went to the local theatre for it, which is still pretty huge (I’m from a country town, don’t judge)

Oh yeah sure bylaw only calls you back AFTER the weekend-long noise violation is over? What the hell kind of democracy is this?

"Next time you only have to leave one message." If you were doing your damn job, I wouldn't have had to leave any. Does the mutant cabal control city council yet? Can you get on that? Some of us were just trying to work on the long weekend.

This city gets worse every fucking year, I swear to god.

FOOD

The festival was great. I require more food.

But ALSO if you were there I probably got at least one photo of you, so let me know if you want it! I have some great shots of people eating. Yes I know no one looks good when they're eating. I'm just that amazing as a photographer.

The Lost Boys | Search and Rescue

The X-Men raid a black site "research" facility experimenting on mutant prisoners.

Cyclops and Echo search for and free the inmates.

Sorry to miss the fair! Took a last-minute trip and then spent much of the weekend in the city at a series of functions and tl;dr didn't have much of an appetite for anything but sleep.

Anyway IDK who helped organize but is there anywhere I can donate? Seems like a good cause.

I have eaten so many new things

I was going to list all the new food I ate, but honestly, I got so distracted by more new things that I forgot to write down everything.
I have so many menus saved on my phone now though and a map that is 65% filled in?

We conquer the rest of the world tomorrow!

* Unconvinced the deep fried chicken filled sticky rice dumplings were good. There was a texture.

* Very convinced about tofu-chorizo sliders with crispy potato in them. I skipped the cubano because it had ham.

* I made a total mess with the fried herring and rosti. Pickles all down the front of my shirt. It was delicious I love a gherkin but it was a mess.

* I'm going to eat croquettes and arachini forever. Burned my tongue, don't care.

* I don't know what the leaf wrapped spicy kabobs were can someone tell me because they were fire.

Code deploy happening shortly

Per the [site community profile] dw_news post regarding the MS/TN blocks, we are doing a small code push shortly in order to get the code live. As per usual, please let us know if you see anything wonky.

There is some code cleanup we've been doing that is going out with this push but I don't think there is any new/reworked functionality, so it should be pretty invisible if all goes well.

Mississippi site block, plus a small restriction on Tennessee new accounts

A reminder to everyone that starting tomorrow, we are being forced to block access to any IP address that geolocates to the state of Mississippi for legal reasons while we and Netchoice continue fighting the law in court. People whose IP addresses geolocate to Mississippi will only be able to access a page that explains the issue and lets them know that we'll be back to offer them service as soon as the legal risk to us is less existential.

The block page will include the apology but I'll repeat it here: we don't do geolocation ourselves, so we're limited to the geolocation ability of our network provider. Our anti-spam geolocation blocks have shown us that their geolocation database has a number of mistakes in it. If one of your friends who doesn't live in Mississippi gets the block message, there is nothing we can do on our end to adjust the block, because we don't control it. The only way to fix a mistaken block is to change your IP address to one that doesn't register as being in Mississippi, either by disconnecting your internet connection and reconnecting it (if you don't have a static IP address) or using a VPN.

In related news, the judge in our challenge to Tennessee's social media age verification, parental consent, and parental surveillance law (which we are also part of the fight against!) ruled last month that we had not met the threshold for a temporary injunction preventing the state from enforcing the law while the court case proceeds.

The Tennesee law is less onerous than the Mississippi law and the fines for violating it are slightly less ruinous (slightly), but it's still a risk to us. While the fight goes on, we've decided to prevent any new account signups from anyone under 18 in Tennessee to protect ourselves against risk. We do not need to block access from the whole state: this only applies to new account creation.

Because we don't do any geolocation on our users and our network provider's geolocation services only apply to blocking access to the site entirely, the way we're implementing this is a new mandatory question on the account creation form asking if you live in Tennessee. If you do, you'll be unable to register an account if you're under 18, not just the under 13 restriction mandated by COPPA. Like the restrictions on the state of Mississippi, we absolutely hate having to do this, we're sorry, and we hope we'll be able to undo it as soon as possible.

Finally, I'd like to thank every one of you who's commented with a message of support for this fight or who's bought paid time to help keep us running. The fact we're entirely user-supported and you all genuinely understand why this fight is so important for everyone is a huge part of why we can continue to do this work. I've also sent a lot of your comments to the lawyers who are fighting the actual battles in court, and they find your wholehearted support just as encouraging and motivating as I do. Thank you all once again for being the best users any social media site could ever hope for. You make me proud and even more determined to yell at state attorneys general on your behalf.

Group TXT: Angelo Espinosa & Sooraya Qadir

I've had an account from a reliable source about an attempted abduction. The person witnessed it while assisting teenagers transitioning into the Underground for transport to new locations. There've apparently been several disappearances over the last few months. Have either of you heard anything? I know we focus on different areas usually.

Message to Cyclops

Got something we might want to be on the lookout for...

Was doing intakes with a few new kids who just came into DX through the Underground today. Two of them mentioned that they'd heard of a place that was experimenting on mutants. Both had never met before and mentioned different locations, but not too far from each other. Put them on the map attached.

Might be a coincidence, but it feels fishy. I'll keep my ears out with the rest of the kids as well and let you.

Dust.
